Virtual Class: How to Make a Kokedama

Have you heard of kokedama? This trendy way to display houseplants is easier to make than you think! Join our resident indoor plant and annuals expert Barbara Hoey in this virtual class where she teaches you everything you need to know to make and care for our own kokedama.

Materials Needed to Make Your Own Kokedama:

  • Approximately 2 cups of potting soil
  • Approximately 2 cups of peat moss
  • String, twine or yarn
  • Fresh or dried moss
  • A 4″ plant, with the soil gently removed from the roots

All of these materials are available at Stonegate Gardens.

What Kinds of Plants Can I Use to Make A Kokedama?

While you can technically use any plant to make a kokedama, we find some plants work a little better than others:

  • pothos – these hardy vining plants thrive on a bit of neglect and can tolerate lower lighting conditions
  • heartleaf philodendron – like pothos, these vining plants don’t require too much care and can grow in slightly darker areas
  • dracaena – another hardy plant; with their spikey leaves, dracaena can make for quite dramatic looking kokedama
  • ferns – craving humidity, kokedama made with ferns love a good misting and enjoy perching on a pebble tray
